Two hundred and fifty runs. That was the target India set the West Indies in Ranchi on Friday night. In most dressing rooms around the world, that number ends the contest at the halfway mark. In the West Indies dressing room, it became a starting gun.
Shai Hope’s men reached 252 for 4 with nine balls to spare. It was the highest successful T20 chase in West Indies history and the second-highest successful chase in men’s T20 International cricket. The five-match series now stands at 1-1, and the caravan rolls into the Holkar Stadium in Indore tonight, Sunday October 11, at 7:00 PM local time (9:30 AM in Guyana and New York).
Let it be known: this is no longer a series India are expected to win. It is a series India must now fight for.
The Captain Who Refuses to Blink
Shai Hope has been the story of this tour. In Ranchi he finished unbeaten on 102 from just 45 balls, with nine sixes and six fours. He raced to 50 off 24 balls while losing three partners inside the powerplay, then brought up his second fifty in only 21 deliveries. It was his third century against India in four innings across T20Is and ODIs.
Read that again. Three hundreds in four innings against the reigning back-to-back T20 world champions. This is not a purple patch. This is a captain who has decided that Indian bowling holds no fear for him.
Alongside him, Sherfane Rutherford has been the perfect enforcer. His 56 in Lucknow was the lone bright spot of a losing cause. In Ranchi he went bigger, smashing 84 off 37 balls in a 120-run partnership with Hope that came off just 54 deliveries. Romario Shepherd then finished the job with an unbeaten 34 off 13. Rovman Powell’s 24 helped steady the ship after the early wickets.
Lucknow Was the Lesson
Credit where it is due. India were ruthless in the opener. The West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs, with Naman Dhir taking three wickets and Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav two apiece. Shreyas Iyer then produced 102 not out off 43 balls, sharing an unbroken 137-run stand with Ishan Kishan, and India strolled home in 14.4 overs.
Many wrote the Windies off that night. The pundits predicted another one-sided Indian home series, like the 3-0 whitewash in 2022. Alternately, this West Indies side absorbed the blow, went back to the drawing board, and returned 72 hours later to dismantle India’s bowling in front of its own crowd.
As we we XThat is the mark of a team with character.
India’s Cracks Are Showing
India are playing without Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy. On paper, their depth was supposed to cover those absences. Ranchi told a different story. Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets, but Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh were taken apart in the back half of the chase, with Hope dispatching low full tosses and flat deliveries to all parts.
Consider the questions now hanging over the home camp:
- If 249 was not enough in Ranchi, what total will feel safe in Indore?
- Who in this attack can stop Hope once he is set?
- India have not lost a home series in over seven years. Are they ready for the pressure of defending that record against a side that has already proven it can win here?
Indore: A Ground Built for Windies Power
The Holkar Stadium is known for its short boundaries and true batting surface. That is music to Caribbean ears. A batting line-up with Hope, Rutherford, Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Shepherd and the exciting young Kamil Pooran does not need a big ground. It needs a flat one, and Indore usually obliges.
The battle will be decided by the bowlers. Akeal Hosein, Roston Chase and Gudakesh Motie offer spin options, while Shamar Joseph brings pace and hostility. Matthew Forde, who leaked 39 runs in two overs in Lucknow, will want to put that night behind him. On a ground like this, the side that bowls the tighter death overs will likely take the series lead.
The Bigger Picture
The West Indies came into this tour ranked seventh in the world, carrying memories of a five-wicket loss to India in the T20 World Cup Super Eight in March and a 2-1 ODI series defeat just last week. They were the underdogs. They still are, on paper.
But the record books tell another story. These are the two-time T20 world champions. This is the same core that beat India 3-2 in the Caribbean in 2023. And this is now a team that has chased 250 in India.
For every young cricketer in Georgetown, Bridgetown, Kingston and Port of Spain, Ranchi was proof that West Indies cricket can still walk into the biggest cricketing nation on earth and take what it wants. Indore is the chance to show it was no fluke.
Win tonight, and the Windies go 2-1 up with two to play. Lose, and Ranchi becomes a footnote.
Hope is in the middle. Hope is in form. Hope is alive.
